Kingswood take Milo President's Trophy beating S. Thomas' 26/22 in pulsating game

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

In a fitting finale, Kingswood recorded a pulsating 26 points (Three goals, one try ) to 22 ( Two goals, one try,and a penalty) win over S. Thomas' in their 'Milo' President's Trophy Under 19 rugger final at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The match was played at a hectic pace from the outset and swung furiously from side to side before Kingswood beat the Thomian outfit.

Thomians opened scoring in the fifth minute from the kick off when winger K. I. Kohonne touched down and Isuru Fernando added the extra points.

The Thomians started off well making advances in the Kingswood territory but Kingswood came back storming with their back division combining effectively and number 'eight' Achala Perera levelled the score with Eranda Weerakkody giving the extra points.

Kingswood went on to score two more tries in rapid succession when fly half Fazil Marijan and full back Eranda Weerakkody planted tries which Weerakkody converted, but Thomian number 'eight' Namal Rajapakse reduced the gap with a deceiving try which Isuru Fernando gave them the extra points giving the Kandy school a healthy 21-14 lead at the breather.

The second half produced a compelling battle of supremacy with the Thomians coming back with a fine forwards display. They drove into rucks and mauls and scored first soon after the short whistle, through their scrum half D. Siriwardena. Isuru Fernando fired over a fine forty metre penalty to further reduce the gap 22-21 but a try scored by Farzil Marija for Kingswood during the dying stages of the match put the issue beyond the Thomians grasp and they carried away the President's Trophy.
