Observer - Bata Schoolboy Cricketer Mahroof - a captain's innings of 101 for Sri Lanka U. 19 by SRIAN OBEYESEKERE When it looked like the era of emerging schoolboy sensations was a forgotten word, yesterday Farveez Maharoof kindled a flash of it smacking a typical captain's innings of 101 to take the Sri Lanka under-19 XI to 243 all out after being put into bat by Pakistan on the second day of the first Test match yesterday at the NCC grounds. Pakistan had replied with 7 for no loss in 2 overs when bad light ended play with 3 overs remaining in a match which has been extended by consent of both teams to Monday to make up for the first day's play on Friday which was called off after only one over was bowled. Fresh from a sojourn of exploits with the bat and ball in English grade, Maharoof, this year's 'Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer' showed he was no flash in the pan with the bat hoisting his fifty with a classic drive off Salman Qadir the off spinner, and again clobbering first change bowler Mohammad Altaf to deep mid wicket to bring up his century. |
