Kandy pummel Air Force 50/3 to enter semi-finals of Clifford Cup S. M. JIFFRY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr. Kandy Sports Club entered the semi-finals of Caltex sponsored Clifford Cup Rugby Tournament when they defeated Sri Lanka Air Force by 50 points (5 goals, 3 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) at the Nittawela Stadium, in Kandy yesterday. At half time Kandy SC led 19-0. Kandy completely dominated play though some of their key players were rested in the first half. Maybe they were too sure of winning did not want to exert themselves too much. Kandy opened scoring early in the first half through prop Jeewa Galgamuwa who used his bulk to power his way to score under the post which was converted by Nalaka Weerakoddy soon afterwards. Antonian schoolboy prop Eranga Swarnatilleke celebrated his debut in club rugby by taking a short tap and scoring far left which went unconverted. Scrum half Amjad Buksh made a welcome return to the side when he sliced through opponents defence to score mid right. Nalaka Weerakoddy added the extra points. The second half saw the Kandy making several replacements with Laga Tavita, Ifela Tema, Radhika Hettiarachchi, Dilip Selvam and Duminda Pullukutiarachchi coming into the side which saw Kandy building up their total though they did not go all out towards it. This half saw No. 8 Tulaga Tavita scoring twice, Winger Dhanushka Pushpakumara (1), Winger Radhika Hettiarachchi (1) and Centre Chamara Withanage (1). Two of them were goalled by Amjad Buksh while the other by Nalaka Weerakoddy. For the Airmen full back Ranjith Anthony converted the penalty. D. Nihal refereed. |
