Jaffna District in 'quarters' of National Netball

The 10th National Netball Championships conducted by the Interim Committee got under way at Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala yesterday, with sixteen teams in competition.

Though 24 teams were expected to participate, eight teams failed to turn up. The championships sponsored by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, got off to a start after a simple opening ceremony attended by the Chief Minister of Wayamba Athula Wijesinghe.

The highlight of the day's proceedings was the participation of teams from Jaffna, Vavuniya and Batticaloa. At the time of going to press, six teams have qualified for the quarterfinals which is scheduled for today. The defending champions Hatton National Bank and last year's runners-up Ports Authority have made their way to the quarters. Jaffna district team who came for the first time for senior nationals, too, qualified to play in the quarters.

The teams already qualified for today's games are HNB, Badulla District, Air Force, Jaffna District, Ports Authority and Kandy District.
