Grand Hotel-SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic bigger and brighter this year

About 200 amateurs are expected to compete at the 3rd Grand Hotel-SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic at the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club on August 30 with SriLankan Airlines as the sponsors and co-sponsors being Dialog GSM, Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank and Carlsberg.

Managing Director of Nuwara-Eliya Hotels, Gerard Ondatjee, said that the main objective was to use golf to promote the hill country and Nuwara Eliya in general. Outlining the tournament, Ondatjee said that it will be conducted in two separate divisions for men and women. Division 'A' is for Handicaps 0 to 24, 0 to 16 for women and men respectively while Division 'B' is for Handicap 24 to 45 and 17 to 28 respectively.

Ondatjee further disclosed that SriLankan Airlines are offering four return air tickets for added attraction. The men's division winners will receive tickets to London, while the winners of the women's division will get tickets to Singapore. Events are also to be worked off for Juniors (both boy's and girl's under-17) with Handicaps of 15 to 28, while Novices under-16 will compete in a six-hole stroke-play format event with attractive prizes on offer for Putting, Chipping, Longest drive and shortest time on the 1st hole. Additional prizes are up for grabs for the men and women too for the longest drive and closest to the pin, which is also for the juniors.

He also said that the Grand Hotel has organised an array of events filled with entertainment and excitement throughout the weekend, which includes a welcome cocktail party, banquet dinner, lunch time buffets, barbecues and a grand entertainment show with a jazz afternoon. Its an event for the entire family. He also thanked all the sponsors for their generous contributions.

The President of the NEGC, N. U. G. Silva, said that he was grateful to Grand Hotel for organising this event and thanked the sponsors, including SriLankan Airlines and hoped that this year's tournament will be even greater than the previous years. Chairman of the Ceylon Tourist Board, Paddy Witharne, Dr. Ramnujam (Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism), Harin de Costa (General Manager of Grand Hotel) and Ms Deshini Abeyewardene (Public Relations Manager of SriLankan Airlines) too addressed a media briefing on this event at the Galle Face Hotel on Thursday night.
