Gold and Silver for WPNA in USA The Western Province netball team did well to win the Gold in the 40-plus plays age category and the silver medal in the 25/39 age category at the Pan Pacific Masters Games held in Sacramento, USA. In the 40-plus category, the WPNA team led by Rohini Perera and included players like Rio Ramlan, K.D. Champa Ranjini, Shahana Uyana-Hewage, Sandya Rajapakse, Sandamali Fernando and Renuka Pitadeniya in the team joined by Caryll Tozer-Perera now domiciled in the USA. The Sri lankans had a tiring time in the tourney, having to play four one hour matches on the first day and at least three matches a day thereafter, they yet qualified for the semi-finals against the Comets from Australia. The match turned out to be a thriller and the Western Province Netball Association team won the last two minutes of the game Due to the absence of the third Sri Lankan team in the 25-39 age group, the WPNA side readily agreed to play in that age category with former Familian Angela de Silva (nee Jayamanthri) joining the team and went on to take the runners-up position and the silver medal. The first quarter of the second final where the WPNA team played was a ding-dong battle and it ended with the scores 5-all but WPNA's opponents the Southern Stars who included players from South Africa, UK, and New Zealand pulled away to a slender lead (6 goals to 4). Another well fought out quarter had the scores level, but the Southern Stars pulled away to win in the final quarter and with the scores 25 goals to 18. The Southern Stars took the Gold and Western Province Netball Association had to be satisfied with the Silver. |
