"S.Asian print industry now mature" President, All India Federation of Master Printers, Sashi Sharma, pledged to show the world that the South Asian print industry has made its entry as a powerhouse to the world arena of printing. He made this pledge at the third South Asian Print Congress and Exhibition held in Colombo. The event would be a means for the South Asian print industry to make giant strides through a global gateway into the international print market, he said. Over 600 delegates from SAARC countries and delegates from all developed nations which manufacture printing machinery and equipment were present. The South Asian print industry counts $6 billion as annual turnover. World Print Congress Chairman, Chrys Sykes said that printing is a means of communication. Globalisation of the printing industry is not a threat, but an exciting opportunity for the Third World, he said. A stamp was launched to mark the event. Minister of Power and Energy, Karu Jayasuriya said this is the first time that a printing event of that magnitude has taken place in the country. He urged the delegates from home and overseas to use the event towards the furtherance of the industry. The Government, which had been in power for 19 months, had halted a civil conflict which took 60,000 lives. If the peace move works, Sri Lanka would be transformed as a gateway to Asia, Minister Jayasuriya said. (EL) |
