Rs. 85m to improve TV technology

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

IWS Holdings Ltd, the parent company of ARTv will invest Rs. 85 million on advanced technology to improve television transmission services.

Launched as Dynavision a decade ago, it is one of the few English TV channels in the country which is in the process of improving the coverage and quality of its programmes along with its name change.

"We have already done the ground work to start the next phase of our development task," said Managing Director ARTv Stefan Beekmeyer.

He said the technology they would implement is the latest and the most advanced and is being introduced in Sri Lanka for the first time. It will include computer-based ultra modern equipment such as push button operating methods.

At present, ARTv is telecast only in the Western Province. Plans are under way to expand its coverage to the Central Province targeting Kandy before the end of this year followed by the Southern Province early next year, Beekmeyer emphasised.

ARTv is affiliated to CNN (Cable News Network) and has exclusive rights to telecast CNN news in Sri Lanka via live satellite. It also outsources programmes from world renowned studios like Universal Studio, Sony Pictures, MGM and Walt Disney.

The company is also exploring ways and means to enter the local English production line as part of their corporate plan specially to present local news in a more different and innovative way, he said. It is said that 90 per cent of television programmes are US based.

Although the channel has carved a niche market, it boasts of a gradual increase in advertising clientele.
