Hibiscus Beach Hotel : 'The exotic tropical flower' in Kalutara

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

Exotic flora in a multitude of colours invite you to a homely abode, promising pleasant surprises and life's simple pleasures.

The location is Kalutara and the hotel is Hibiscus Beach Hotel which typifies its name.

The swimming pool overlooking guest rooms and the sea.

Hibiscus Beach Hotel, Kalutara has now been extensively refurnished and re-opened for business under a new management. It is now fully owned by E.W. Balasuriya Group of Companies. It offers 50 luxury rooms with all modern facilities of a 4-star property including individual air conditioners, hot/cold water, satellite television with sports channels and movie channels, local and music channels, mini bar, hair dryers, individual electronic safes and room service. The guest rooms, with beautiful interior decor, are built with balconies, in such a manner to offer tourists panoramic views of either the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean or the hotel's large swimming pool.Hibiscus has two fresh water swimming pools, a gymnasium, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, pool, table and internet cafe.

The main restaurant which could accommodate over 100 guests offers delicious Western, Eastern, Chinese and Sri Lanka cuisine prepared by a team of qualified and experienced chefs in the form of theme nights five days a week with a sit down 'candle light' dinner on Saturdays with live entertainment.

Beach BBQ, Jungle BBQ, seafood nights or Lobster dinners are arranged on request. The hotel stands on a 4-acre land which has been tastefully landscaped. It is well patronised mainly by European holiday makers and other tourists from around the world.

Since Hibiscus was opened after a massive refurbishing, it recorded a one hundred percent occupancy during the last winter, and thereafter a healthy occupancy due to the luxury facilities it offers, General Manager, Hibiscus Beacn Hotel, Anil Perera said.

Anil, who is a veteran hotelier with over 25 years experience here and aborad, is also the General Manager of Hotel Casamara, Kandy, also owned by E.W. Balasuriya Group of Companies.

He said that due to the modern facilities, good food and short distance from Colombo, Hibiscus has become a popular choice also among Sri Lankan holiday makers who are offered 'specials'.

Future plans at Hibiscus is to add some luxury suites and deluxe rooms, and to have a sauna and spa.

Hibiscus Beach Hotel is owned and managed by E.W. Balasuriya Group of Companies who also own Hotel Casamara, Kandy, Balasuriya Jewellers, Kandy, Kandy Lake Club and Senkadagala Finance Company.

Kani Lanka Resort and Spa

by Pelham Juriansz

Kani Lanka Resort & Spa(formerly Hotel Sindbad), situated just a mere 48 kilometres South of Colombo, is about one and a half hours drive from Colombo. An impressive holiday is what you are in for when one visits this luxurious resort. Situated in Katukurunda, just south of Kalutara, on the Southwest coast, it has 105 rooms consisting of 6 suites, 8 standard rooms and 91 rooms with sea or lagoon view.

These rooms are all furnished with all the modern facilities-fully air conditioned, with telephone, piped music, hot & cold shower, terrace(some overlooking the Kalu Ganga), and balcony. Originally designed by a French architect and known as Hotel Meriveire, it was redesigned by renowned architect the late Geoffrey Bawa.

Surrounded by the enthralling beauty of the Kalu Ganga, some of the memorable incidents etched in my memory is that of the spectacular sunset which earmarked the visit there.

The river cruise down the Kalu Ganga symbolises the rich cultural and religious heritage of Sri Lanka as one sees a temple, mosque and a church.

There are several water sports including water skiing, boating with paddles and sailing boats, and of course canoeing.

The spa includes aromatherapy which revives the youthful energies and gives us more confidence in enjoying the myriad and diverse services this exclusive resort offered its vacationers. We haven't spoken of the best part of the Hotel and that is the cuisine. To start with a sumptuous breakfast will be served promptly and perfectly as a prerequisite for a good day.

At the Saffron Cafe and The Spice, exotic oriental dishes and delicious western cuisine dishes are served.
