by Umangi de Mel Alicia of Sun FM * To what audience does your station cater?
* What kind of music do you play? I play music from the 80's and the 90's. At Sun every night has its own theme and on Tuesdays we take you back to two of the greatest decades of all time. I play music back from the days of the temptations right upto stuff from Keith Sweat of Hootie and the Blowfish. * How do you make your listeners cackle? By making an idiot out of myself on air sometimes (and I don't mean on purpose...what are you laughing at). When you are new to it you do end up making a few mistakes with the equipment as well as a lot with your presenting. I guess the listeners do have a good laugh in our expense but hey it's all in good fun. * What's the response? The response is amazing cause at one moment I'd be talking to a 13 year old who's sending out a dedication to her first crush and then move on to talk to a husband or wife from a marriage of 20 years or so. It's thrilling to know you reach out to so many different age groups through the music you play. * If you are presenting a show which is not a request show, do you play music that the audience wants or is it music that reflects your taste in music? If it's the latter, is it fair by the listeners? No, we don't get to play what we want all the time. When making playlists for our shows we try to balance with a little bit of everything so that everyone will be happy. Fortunately I have my playlist done by my music controller (The Saint) who I might add, does quite a good job at keeping everyone happy. * We've had people calling us since we started the DJ picks, about their presentation and the accents that some of them adopt which are alien to Sri Lanka. What have you to say? Do you speak in your natural accent or do you feel that you've got to imitate any kinda accent? No I don't think any sort of accent is required but you also got to keep in mind that we do have quite a few presenters in Sri Lanka who were born in different countries. There's really nothing you can do about the way they speak now can you? * Do you portray your true image on air? Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. You have to be very careful with what you say and how you say it. There are a few rules you know. Besides I'd probably get fired if I was myself on air all the time. * How do you draw your listener? I try and give them exactly what they want, when they want it, just the way they like it. Which would be the very best in music along with a little humour. ********* Bimali of TNL Radio 1. To what audience does your station cater?
The show, by the way, is called `Essential mix'. 2. What kind of music do you play? We play all kinds of music, from rock to pop to R&B...hey we have it all. I enjoy everything 'cause I love music, which is why I'm doing what I am. Why do I play the kind of music that I play??) Cause I love it...and also cause I have to. 3. How do you make your listeners cackle? Well, I don't really believe in getting stuff off the net to keep my listeners entertained. I'd rather be myself and let the natural funny side in me come out..I'm a bit of a psychotic person. I'd do and say crazy things that make people laugh. 4. What's the response? Well, the interaction is pretty good. Sometimes you get really crazy people calling you up and saying all kinds of nice things about you (and sometimes otherwise, as well....I'm an honest person ye know) That's what keeps me going at the end of the day, the people out there and the music as well. Sometimes it's a bit hectic, but hey that's what it's all about. 5. If you are presenting a show that is not a request show play music that the audience want or is it music that reflects your taste in music? Well, if I had the choice of playing my own music then I certainly won't play all my favourites..Okay, so may be a few here and a few there but I'd also make sure that I play all kinds of music which is not too hard cause I enjoy almost everything, especially rock. Oops! and pop, R&B as well. 6. Do you portray your true image on air? Before I started working at TNL, I used to hate DJs that sounded fake with this real phony accents. I'd never be like that, I speak the way I always do, no accent or any such poppycock. What you hear is basically the real, crazy Bimali! 7. We've had people calling us since we started the DJ picks, about their presentation and the accents that some of them adopt which are alien to Sri Lanka. What have you to say? Well, I think already told the answer to that. Basically the person you hear when you switch on the radio is the real me. I couldn't bear being someone else. It wouldn't come out right. So, yes! I portray the real me. 8. How do you draw your listener? Hmmmmmmmm...........I just be myself! I relate to the music that I play. I always react to it...And sometimes I'm very passionate about the songs I play. And that just comes through. So that's how it happens |
