Defence Minister calls for full alert Sixty one officers and 40 sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy passed out at the passing-out parade held on Friday at the Naval Academy in Trincomalee. Chief guest, Defence Minister Tilak Marapana addressing the sailors said that, the Forces should be on the alert always, whether peace prevails in the country or not and emphasised that it is very important that the servicemen maintain high standards of discipline at all time. Minister assures 7500 garment jobs The Government has planned to provide 7500 jobs in the textile industry under a program with the support of eighteen textile companies and first step will commence on August 25 at Bakamuna in Naula, in Dambulla District providing over 300 new employment opportunities, Cabinet Spokesman Prof G.L. Peiris announced at a media confab last week. The Minister said that the country has received a quota of 25,000 dozens which will be spread out among 18 companies. (DPL) CTB fares up by 15% from Sept. 1 Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB) has obtained the approval for a fare hike of 15 per cent for cluster companies' (CTB) buses from the first week of September. An official from the Ministry of Transport said that as promised 1,000 buses lying in several depots for minor repairs will be deployed before the fare hike takes place. However, the CTB charges will be below those of private buses with the 15 per cent hike. (DPL) |
