Brig. Wijegunawardene takes over East by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Sri Lanka Army has created a post of a Security Forces Commander post separately for the East with immediate effect, military sources said. Brigadier Wajira Wijegunawardena who returned from Hawaii after following a course, has been appointed for the new post and is due to take over shortly. Meanwhile three Brigadiers including military spokesman, Brigadiers Sanath Karunaratne along with Niranjan Ranasinghe and Tissa Jayawardena will leave for Hawaii next month for a three month course on Asia Pacific defence. Brig. R. Chandrawansa has been appointed as the Secretary to Defence Review Committee in place of Brigadier Ranasinghe. Colonel Sumedha Perera has been appointed as the military spokesman in place of Brig. Sanath Karunaratne. Asked whether as to why a new SF Commander post was set up in the east, a senior military officer said that it was on the card for sometime, since Batticaloa and Trincomallee brigades were operated independently and there was a need of a SF Commander to co-ordinate operations between the two brigades. |
