OBSERVER-BATA Silver Jubilee cricket awards on Friday

by A. C. DE SILVA and LESLIE FERNANDO

It's five days more for the top of the ladder show - the Silver Jubilee OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer of the year awards ceremony at the BMICH on Friday August 29 from 6.30 pm onwards.

The show will be backed by the effervescent sounds of Sohan and the X'periments with Corrine and Rajive and host of other artistes.

And there is a man to keep the show going with that popular compere Laddie Hettiarachchy who had to be persuaded to 'take the Mike'. This is Laddie's 22nd Observer-Bata show and he has agreed to come in for this year only.

The Observer-Bata show in previous years had winners who have made their mark in the world of cricket after leaving school and naming each and every one of them will take up too much space. In this year's Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Farveez Maharoof of Wesley College has not wasted time in just playing around after the announcement of the results. He had gone on from strength to strength and scored a century against the visiting Pakistan under 19 cricket team. That he has done as captain of the Sri Lanka under 19 team and it speaks volumes of the capabilities of this youngster - another good bet for Sri Lanka's Test team for the future.

Friday is going to be a busy day for Maharoof as he is down to captain the Sri Lanka under 19 team in the third three-day game against Pakistan under 19 at the Galle Stadium. Besides winning the top award, Maharoof was also picked as the Best Batsman All-Island.

The outstation OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award goes to Chinthaka Rasanga Perera of President's College, Kotte who also wins the awards for the Best Bowler and Best All-rounder.

Kokuvil Hindu College's young batsman Chandranathan Mathusan is the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Northern Province and he was picked by a panel of judges of the Jaffna Schools Cricket Association.

While Mathusan was picked for the 'plum' of inter-school cricket in the Northern Province, last year's winner of the title of Schoolboy Cricketer of the North Pathmanathan Lavendra of St. John's Jaffna is the runner-up this year.

Bata's Export Manager - Errol Nugawela - the 'livewire' on the sponsors side, has been working round the clock to see that this historic show goes off without any mishaps and informs all schools that their ticket quotas have been posted to the schools and to collect them. However, he wishes to state that any school that have not received their tickets to contact him at Bata Shoe Company at Ratmalana, Telephone: 0712/272999 or 605221.
