Mithun Perera wins Pin Fernando Trophy and evokes memories of master golfer The coveted Pin Fernando Trophy golf tournament this year, saw the emergence of a new era in the sport in Sri Lanka with a new generation of golfers stealing the limelight from the old guard of golf. The annual tournament named after the legendary golfer was worked off at the Royal Colombo Golf Club with a host of premier golfers and young challengers teeing off for the honours. Sixteen year old prodigy Mithun Perera evoked memories of the master golfer Pin Fernando when he powered his way to win the Pin Fernando Trophy with a net 66. Praveen Dias, another teenager emerged in second place with a score of net 67, confirming the emergence of a new breed of golfers. The old guard, however, remained valiant with 'old war horse' Joe perera scoring 42 points to become the first day's hero and winning the Best Qualifier Trophy. This year's tournament saw a change in competition format with the standard match play format being replaced by a two day stroke play event. The first round results included: Most Net Eagles - A. Ahmed (4), Nearest to the 9th Hole J. Carter (3'2"). The legendary Pin Fernando himself won his first championship at the tender age of 17 years at the Havelock Golf Club. Later the same year, the young 'colt' was selected to represent Ceylon at an international tournament held at the RCGC where he made sports headlines when he beat golfers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Ceylon to win the tournament. Generous gift packs were provided by United Tractors Company together with their main principal Caterpillar who once again sponsored this tournament, one of the major events at the RCGC. |
