Captain Indrasena appointed National Boxing Coach Army boxing coach for the past 15 years, Captain R. K. Indrasena, has been appointed as the National Boxing Coach for the years 2003 and 2004, by the Department of Sports Development and has received the approval from the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando. Prior to the appointment, the Sports Development Department called for applications for the post and had conducted interviews. In 1995 Indrasena followed a boxing coaching programme at the Lipzig University in Hungary, on a scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Sports. On the recommendation made by the ABA of Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Sports appointed him as the National Boxing Coach in 1999 too. Representing the Army, he won at the National Championships in 1983 and 1984 and represented the country in both those years. Over the past 15 years, he has produced a large number of Army boxers and many of them went on to be National Champions. Army has been having a indomitable boxing team and this is due to Indrasena's dedicated training. In year 2001, he pioneered Women's Boxing in the Army and since then they have become a formidable team. He was coach for the National Women's Team at the 1st Asian Women's Boxing Championships held at Bangkok in 2001. In 1994, he was the coach to the team of 3 boxers for Commonwealth Games held in Victoria, Canada. Apart from being a coach, Indrasena has been a competent referee/Judge in the Sri Lanka ABA panel since 1993. In January 2002, he qualified as an Asian referee/Judge. Donald Munasinghe |
