Two businessmen-Priya and Ana to put golf on firm footing Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) has hand-picked two well-known businessmen with sporting links for key roles as a master plan to put Sri Lanka on the world map as a golfing destination. Priya Fernando, a veteran golfer, and Ana Punchihewa of cricketing fame will help the SLGU fast track its ambitious development plan. Fernando, son of legendary golfer, the late Pin Fernando, has assumed duties as Chairman of the Selection Committee, and is also a member of the SLGU Council. He is the Chairman of United Tractor and Equipment Limited and is making a come back into the sport after a long lay off. He is also the newly appointed CEO of the Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Kandy. Punchihewa, meanwhile is turning a new chapter in the role of sports administrator by attempting to make use of his well documented experience as the President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, in order to put golf into the world map. As the SLGU's new Consultant, Punchihewa is expected to infuse greater dynamism to the promotion of the sport. An earlier stint as Secretary of the SLGU, saw Punchihewa, making Sri Lanka an Asian force in golf by bringing talented caddies into the limelight. Two Asian Games silver medallists in Sri Lanka's fold prove that Punchihewa can indeed help bolster Sri Lankan golf. (L.G.) |
