Indians Chakravarthi and Jayalakshmy take doubles title

by LAL GUNESEKERA

The two Indian lasses Rushmi Chakravarthi and Jayaram-Sai Jayalakshmy won the doubles title and pocketed US Dollars 650 at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grand Slam Development Fund Women's Professional Championship at the National Tennis Centre (NT) in Greenpath yesterday.

This event organised by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) carries prize money totalling US Dollars 10,000. This was sponsored by Jembo.

The top seeded Chakravarthi and Jayalakshmy beat the I-Hsuan Hwang of Chinese Taipei and Varanya Vijuksanaboon of Thailand in the final comfortably in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). The unseeded Hwang-Vijuksanaboon pair, who had earlier beaten the bottom seeded Veronica Ctvrtnickova of Czechoslovakia and Iriri Rai of India and the fourth seeded Indian combination of Lata Assudani and Rati Kumar in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively in straight sets, failed to live upto expectations yesterday. However, they won US Dollars 350.

Top seeded Thai, Napaporn Tongsalee and Germany's unseeded "giant killer" Nadine Hassinger will battle it out for the US Dollars 1,600 prize money final of the singles today (Sunday) at 10 a.m. in what promises to be an absorbing tussle for supremacy. The runner-up will pocket US Dollars 1,000.

In the semi-finals yesterday, Napaporn Tongsalee beat sixth seeded Isha Lakhani of India 6-4, 6-4, while Nadine Hassinger beat fourth seeded Archana Venkataraman of India 6-3, 6-3. While the Thai girl entered the final without any upsets, the German lass on the other hand, booked her berth in the final after brushing aside three seeded players - bottom seed Rushmi Chakravarthi of India (7-6, 6-1) in the second round, Veronica Ctvrtnickova of Czechoslovakia the fifth seed (6-1, 6-3) in the "quarters" and then fourth seeded Archana Venkataraman of India (6-3, 6-3) in yesterday's semi-final.
