Forces to the rescue by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Over 5,000 service personnel have been deployed by the three services to keep the hospitals functioning smoothly following the strike islandwide by health personnel. The forces personnel, kept on the alert for a health sector strike situation were deployed on September 17 immediately after the trade union action was implemented. According to Military Spokesman, Colonel Sumeda Perera, the Army has deployed nearly 600 personnel comprising doctors, nurses, technical staff and drivers in Colombo and the outstations. He said that everything is under control and added that they had not received any complaints so far. He also said the forces were prepared to continue for as long as the strike lasts, although the initial deployment was for 48 hours. The Navy has deployed health teams comprising drivers, cooks and technicians in eight hospitals in the South including Karapitiya, Mahamodara, Hambantota. Spokesman for the Navy, Captain Jayantha Perera said that the Navy was prepared to increase the staff if the need arises. According to Wing Commander Ajanta Silva, the Air Force has also deployed a team of about 400 doctors, nurses and technical staff at hospitals in Negombo, Marawila, Chilaw, Diyatalawa, Kalutara and Polonnaruwa hospitals. The Police has also deployed 83 personnel to assist the health teams in hospitals. This according to SSP Rienzy Perera is excluding the number maintaining law and order in the hospitals. He said that no major problems in violation of law and order had been reported so far. |
