Glowing tribute to late Bakeer Markar by P. Krishnaswamy Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, President of the Sarvodaya Shramadhana Movement in a glowing tribute to former parliamentarian, Speaker and Governor of the Western Province, late Deshamanya Al-haj Mohamed Abdul Bakeer Markar, said that if he was alive today, he would have been a foremost leader of a non-party, non-political, non-sectarian and non-violent approach to re-awaken our country as a shining example to the world for peace and harmony. He was speaking as guest speaker at the sixth Bakeer Markar commemoration held last Friday at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, under the auspices of the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity. Speaking on the topic " People's Pathway to Peace', he said, "we should strongly believe that in Sri Lanka, we as a people, can achieve the objective of peace with great success, if we work with patience and right understanding'. The first step towards peace is sowing the seeds of non-violence in human consciousness". Governor of Western Province, Alavi Mowlana, launched the website of the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity and a trilingual book of the Centre to mark the occasion, was also released. Mass Communication Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Markar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M.Azwer were also present at the ceremony. |
