World summit on Skanda-Murugan here in 2005 Scholars and devotees of the deity Murugan of Skanda along with representatives of the Tamil community from around the world will assemble in Malaysia in early November to participate at the third International Conference Seminar on Murugan-Skanda. The organisers have announced that the conference will take place from Nov. 2 to 5 at the world-famous Batu Caves Subramaniar Temple near Kuala Lumpur. India hosted the First International Conference Seminar on Skanda Murugan at the Institute of Asian Studies in Chennai in 1998 with about 150 delegates and observers from 23 countries participating. The largest foreign delegation of 25 Sri Lankan scholars was headed by S. Thondaman, who proposed that the next conference be hosted by Sri Lanka. His proposal was unanimously approved by the first conference delegates, but Minister Thondaman's sudden demise a year later, and the ethnic conflict which prevailed at the time, caused the second international conference to be shifted to Mauritius, with the third conference scheduled to take place in Malaysia. Sri Lankan delegates are confident that Sri Lanka may be chosen as the host nation for the fourth conference in early 2005, if enough Sri Lankan delegates participate at the Malaysia conference. The forthcoming world conference in Malaysia represents an extraordinary opportunity for scholars, devotees and organisations to meet and interact. The conference may long be remembered as a watershed in the study of one of the world's great religious and literary traditions. Sri Lankans and others interested in attending the conference, should register before October 1. Full details on the world conference series on Skanda Murugan may be had online at website www.muruganorg. or by phoning Dr. Vimala Krishnapillai on 257-3803. |
