PM leaves for NY

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe left for New York on Saturday morning to attend the 58th General Assembly of the United Nations.

He will attend the opening session on September 23 and will address the assembly on September 26.

India FM here on Oct. 14

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwanth Sinha is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka, from October 14 to 16. During his three-day stay the foreign minister will co-chair the Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Commission Meeting to be held in Colombo, with his Sri Lankan counterpart Tyronne Fernando.

The Minister's visit which was previously scheduled in mid August, was postponed due to the Motion of No-Confidence against the India Defence Minister.

Pakistan to bolster SL defence gear

Pakistan has indicated that it would be willing to assist the Sri Lankan defence services with US$ 20 million worth of military vehicles, equipment and other defence requirements, according to highly placed defence sources. This follows the visit of the Pakistan General Mahamud Aziz Khan, to Sri Lanka last week on the invitation of the government.

Meanwhile, another team from the National Defence College in Wellington, India headed by a Lt. General, are also scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow. The team of twenty two senior officers and they will meet the three service commanders and also visit Trincomalee during their three-day visit. - R.K.

First class treatment for suspect!

The local businessman allegedly involved in a US $ seven million fraud with a Venezuelan company based in Caracas is being investigated in connection with three other frauds committed by him in Mauritius, Caracas and Germany.

The suspect who was earlier remanded by the Colombo Chief Magistrate has been admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo. He has refused to make a fresh statement to the CID officers who tried to interrogate him.

When the case was taken up before the Chief Magistrate last week he was re-remanded for a further period and ordered the JMO Colombo to examine him. Meanwhile, CID officers have complained to the Commissioner General of Prisons that the suspect whilst being warded at the hospital had access to cellular phone facilities and was surrounded by several visitors. The Prison guards detailed to provide security to the suspect were not to seen anywhere when CID officers visited him last week. - J.J.

SWRD - Sirimavo commemoration on Sept. 26

The S.W.R.D. - Sirimavo Bandaranaike Commemoration ceremony will be held on September 26 at the Horagolla Samadhi under the auspices of the Bandaranaike Commemorative committee.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Anura Bandaranaike MP, Sunethra Bandaranaike, members of Parliament, local government bodies and relatives of the family will be present to pay homage by placing floral tributes at the Samadhi.The ceremony will commence at 8.15 a.m.

SLT to takeover Lanka Bell

Sri Lanka Telecom Ltd. yesterday confirmed its decision to acquire local fixed wireless operator Lanka Bell Ltd. ending weeks of speculation of an impending acquisition that boosted SLT's shares to record highs.

A highly placed SLT source told the Sunday Observer that the take-over deal would be concluded by the end of this week.

Details were not disclosed about the nature of the acquisition, but a Dow Jones report of Friday, quoting a SLT spokesman stated that the SLT was eyeing either full control or a two thirds stake in Lanka Bell possibly through an issue of shares.

Former Maliban GM passes away

The retired General Manager of Maliban Biscuit Manufacturies Ltd Mr. Stanley Gamage (62) passed away on September 18 due to a heart attack. He leaves behind his wife Malkanthi and two children Apsara and Dishan.

A science graduate from Peradeniya University he obtained his MBA at the Post Graduate Institute of Jayawardenapura and continued to provide his services to private sector. K. G. Industries and the Upali Group were fortunate enough to have his services before he joined Maliban Biscuits as the General Manager. He was specially trained in ISO certification and quality assurance. He played a major role in promoting Maliban products abroad visiting foreign markets frequently. The remains lie at No. 2, Dilrukshi Place, Old Kesbewa Road, Nugegoda. The funeral will take place at General Cemetery Borella at 5.00 p.m. today.
