Sri Lankan cricketers to figure in Netherlands sixes next year

Sri Lankan Ambassador in the Netherlands Mr. Rupa Karunatilaka hopes to get some Sri Lankan cricketers for the tenth six-a-side cricket tournament for the Sri Lanka Ambassador's Trophy in Netherlands next year.

Speaking as chief guest at the awards ceremony of the ninth inter-club cricket sixes at the Amsterdam Cricket Club grounds, Mr. Karunatilaka thanked all those in the organising committee for a successful tournament. Messrs Rene van Ierschot - President of the Royal Netherlands Cricket Board, Max de Bruin Jr - President of the Amstordamsche Cricket Board, Flavian Aponso - the former Sri Lankan cricketer now domiciled in the Netherlands and Russel Kern comprised the organising committee.

Ambassador Karunatilaka also thanked Hasitha de Alwis and the Sri Lanka Tea Board for arranging tea promotion at the tourney and Rajeewa Jayaweera and SriLankan Airlines for the complimentary ticket and also to Anslem Perera of Mlesna (Ceylon) Limited and Jayantha Karunaratne of Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt.) Limited for the gift packs of tea.

There were 12 first division cricket clubs in the Netherlands that participated in the tournament which was won by Voorburg C.C. who beat league champions VRA in the final.

This tournament started in 1994 when the then resident Sri Lankan Ambassador Mr. P. G. Karunasiri got the tourney going and it has now grown in popularity and is a much looked forward to event and President of Royal Netherlands Cricket Board Mr. Rene van Ierschot thanked all those responsible in making this a reality and stated that it brings Sri Lanka and The Netherlands closer together strengthening the existing bonds.
