Indoor Cricket World Cup 2004 and Challenger Cup tourneys launched

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

The launching of the 2004 Indoor Cricket World Cup which is to be held in Sri Lanka in October next year coincided with the staging of the Austasia sponsored WICF Challenger Cup at the Austasia Indoor Cricket Complex last Thursday.

The logo and the mascot of the Indoor Cricket World Cup was declared opened at a ceremony at the indoor cricket complex by the officials of the Sri Lanka Indoor Cricket Federation and the World Indoor Cricket Federation.

Referring to the WICF Challenger Cup for Emerging Nations, the secretary general of the WICF Karen Denman said that the purpose of staging an indoor tournament of this nature is to give an opportunity to emerging nations to join the elite indoor cricket playing nations.

There are five indoor cricket playing nations who have gained full status from the world body. They are Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The winning team of the Challenger Trophy will be eligible to participate at the 2004 World Cup. Associate members of the Federation India, Pakistan and The United Arab Emirates will take part in the Challenger Trophy to be held from September 22 to 27 at the Indoor Cricket Complex, Thalawathugoda.

Ross Collinns, the President of the Australian Indoor Cricket Federation and the Head of the Technical Committee of the WICF said that at present rules and regulations are being reviewed by the Technical Committee and it is proposed that there will be additions to all tournament rules and regulations to ensure that the future tournaments that are run by the WICF are along a similar format, without detracting from the colour and flair that each host country may add to the World Cup.

He further said that the world body finds that Sri Lanka has the ability and the resources to run the tournament at the highest level.

The Chairman of the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association Dhakshitha Anthony said that he was proud and honoured in having the opportunity in conducting the event in Sri Lanka which will no doubt help to host the 2004 World Cup.

Associated at the press briefing were Rukmal Seneviratne, Managing Director Austasia, Karen Denman (Secretary General WICF), Dakshita Anthony (Chairman Ceylon Indoor Cricket Federation), Ross Collinns (Chairman Technical Committee WICF), Kishu Gomes (CEO, MD Caltex Lubricants, Sponsors of the National Indoor Cricket team SL).
