Pubudu Wickrama overall champ in 4 WD class

Confifi Group Hotels together with Colombo Motor Sports Club, successfully conducted the above rally through a gruelling 500 km route ending at Club Palm Garden Hotel at Beruwela.

A traditional "time-speed and distance" rally, the first car started at 9.00 a.m. from Kotte Parliament grounds. Thirty (30) competitors participated in stage 1 competition over the 200 km route through Eheliyagoda to a break at Ratnapura. The rally re-commenced at 4.30 p.m. and took the competitors through a tougher 300 km run going out to the Sinharaja Forest and through Nakiadeniya and Madampe Estates, back to the finish at Club Palm Garden by 11.00 p.m.

The organisers worked through the night to produce the results after breakfast on Sunday morning. In the group for motor cycles the combination of Shafraz Junaid and Akri Ameer proved unbeatable. They won their class in both stage 1 and 2 and were therefore the overall winners in this category. Special mention must also be made of Shane Gunawardena, who was placed 2nd overall for motor cycles as Shane did the entire route without a navigator.

The class for motor cars saw Stefan Furkhan take a comfortable victory in stage 1 with 23 debit points. Stefan was unlucky to suffer a mechanical trouble, and did not make up to stage 2. The winner in this class for stage 2 was veteran driver Rodney Mason in his Kia Rio. Rodney was navigated by Nishan Wasalathanthri, and went on to win the overall class for cars.

The 4WD class proved to give best competition Stage 1 was won by Pubudu Wickrama, ably navigated by brother Prasad, in his Toyota Cab. Pubudu finished stage 1 with just 16 debits winning both his class, and the overall stage 1. Another very experienced driver Prasanna Ranasinghe compensated for a mistake in stage 1, by comfortably winning stage 2 both for his class and overall. Prasanna's 20 debits were very impressive given the terrain and the conditions of the rally. The top 4 in this class went on to be the top 4 overalls.

The rally was sponsored by Confifi, Nilmin Nanayakkara of N-Car Travels for donating a prize of an airline ticket to Kuala Lumpur plus an entry ticket to the 2004 Formula One Grand Prix in Malaysia. Pubudu Wickrama was the lucky winner of this prize.
