US coach Hartzeg to train Lankan tennis players

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Rod Hartzeg, a highly recommended coach from the United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR), has been contracted for an initial period of one year by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) for a coaching assignment and replaces Indian national Arul Amalnathan.

Hartzeg, who arrived in the country a few days back, is a top coach in the Missisipi area and was one of the 20 applicants to respond. Seven were short listed and the SLTA finally settled on Hartzeg.

A spokesman for the SLTA told the Sunday Observer that Hartzeg will first come into contact with local players when he takes on the "Advanced Squad" comprising about 25 players. He will also be in charge of the national squads as well.

His predecessor, Amalnathan is yet in Sri Lanka and involved with the SLTA's Junior Development Programme in the outstation.

The Jombo Futures Men's Championship, which is an US Dollars 10,000 event is scheduled to be worked off at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from October 20 to November 2 where top professionals will be seen in action.

SLTA's spokesman said that there will be two Futures tournaments "back to back." The first is from October 20 to 27 and the second from October 28 to November 2 in Colombo. The other two tournaments are being staged in Chinese Taipei first and then Thailand before moving on to Sri Lanka.

The Mini Tennis Championship only for schools in the Colombo region is scheduled to be held at the NTC from October 27 to 30 involving six schools. The three boy's sides are St. Peter's, Ananda and D. S. Senanayake College, while the three girls schools are Musaeus, Bishop's and Holy Family, Bambalapitiya.

The Mercantile Championship will be worked off in three divisions also at the NTC in Greenpath on two weekends (November 8 and 9, November 15 and 16).
