Outstation Schools dominate All-Island School Games

The last eleven disciplines in the second stage of the All-Island School Games 2003 were successfully completed at different venues throughout the island on September 13, 14 and 15. The notable feature was the dominance of outstation schools in most of the events.

The Games were conducted by Sports and Physical Education Section of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs. Altogether 22 disciplines were worked off in two stages from September 6 and over 4000 schoolboys and girls from 600 schools participated at 34 different venues.

According to Ms. Olivia Gamage, Consultant, Sports and Physical Education Section of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, the first and second stages of the Games are now completed and they have made all arrangements for the showpiece of the Games, that's the Athletic Championships to be staged from September 25 to 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. For this main event too, there will be over 4000 athletes who have performed well at zonal and district level meets conducted by the respective authorities.

Royal and Visakha tennis champs

Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya retained the boys and girls titles at the Tennis Championships played at the SLTA courts, Green Path. Ananda College and St. Peter's College took second and third positions in the boys tournament while Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya and Bishop's College were runners-up and third in the girls tourney.

Christ Church and Mahamaya hockey winners

Christ Church Vidyalaya, Matale and Mahamaya College, Kandy are the two new champions in the boys and girls hockey championships played at University of Colombo grounds, Royal College grounds and Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV grounds.

St. Thomas' College, Matale and Zahira College, Matale were runners-up and third in the boys tournament.

In the girls tournament, second place went to Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo came third.

St. Joseph Trinco cricket champs

St. Joseph's College, Trincomalee became champions in the Softball Cricket Tournament played at four venues at Panadura-Sri Sumangala, St. John's, Rajakeeiya Vidyalaya and Municipal Council grounds.

Addalaichena MMV (Eastern Province) were runners-up while Welimada MMV were third. Altogether 24 schools participated and the matches were played on a knock-out basis with 20-over games.

Dhammika-Best Bodybuilder

J. W. P. Dhammika of Maha Manthinda Pirivena Institute, Matara was selected as the Best Bodybuilder at the Schoolboy Bodybuilding Contest held at Sri Suboothi Vidyalaya, Battaramulla.

Dhammika proved his class amongst the other 35 physical culturists.

D. P. K. Randali Sandaruwan of St. Thomas' College, Matara was placed second and M. M. Sajith Ishara Munasinghe of Saranath MV, Kuliyapitiya secured the third position. Senarath and Dilhani win at cycling

F. Sumedha Rangana Senarath of Niwanthakachethiya MV, Anuradhapura rode in grand style to win the boys 25 laps cycle race held round the Viharamahadevi Park last Sunday. The start and finish was opposite the Art Gallery, Green Path.

In the girls 15 laps race, around the Viharamahadevi Park, P. A. Thanuja Dilhani of Thelahara MV Nikaweratiya won easily. The runner-up was L. A. Kumudini Chandralatha of Bandaranaike Model MV, Puttalam and third was W. Thushani Delrin Fernando of Sixth Pope Paul's MV, Halpe.

Ananda and St. Joseph BV Gymnastic champs

Ananda College and St. Joseph BV, Kegalle performed the best to carry away major honours at the Gymnastic Competition for boys and girls held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

While Ananda College came on top of the boys competition, St. Anthony's National School, Wattala came in second and Royal College were third.

Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena gymnasts were runners-up in the girls while Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo were third.

St. Zavier's - Soccer Champs

The soccerites from Mannar, St. Zavier's College won the under-19 Football Championships played at Reid Avenue grounds. They beat Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa by 2 goals to 1 in the final.

Zahira College, Maradana were third.

Dadalla B. T. S. Vidyalaya, Galle defeated De Mazenod College, Kandana by 3 goals to 2 in the under-17 Soccer final played at the City League grounds.

Dharmaraja College, Kandy took third spot.

Harischandra and Sumana Balika Karate champs

Harischandra Vidyalaya, Negombo and Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura won the boys and girls titles respectively at the Karate Championships worked off at Viharamahadevi BV, Kiribathgoda.

Karunaratne Buddhist MV, Maththumagala were runners-up in the boys Karate and Ferguson Girls High School, Ratnapura and Gothami BV, Colombo were joint second in the girls karate.

Ranabima Royal and St. Joseph Balika chess champions

Ranabima Royal College, Kandy and St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle won the under-19 boys and girls titles at the Chess Championships held at Isipatana Vidyalaya, Colombo. Newcomers to chess, Ranabima Royal College, Kandy pushed Royal College, Colombo the defending champions to runners-up position. Dharmaraja College, Kandy were placed third.

Last year's runner-up Visakha Vidyalaya were again runner-up this year in the girls chess tournament while Mahamaya College, Kandy were third.

Jinaraja Vidyalaya a double in Judo

Jinaraja MV and Jinaraja BV both from Gampola achieved a good double when their student took the top spot in both the boys and girls Judo Championships worked off at the Judo Training Center near the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium.

Gangapura MV, Gampola and Ananda College, Colombo were placed second and third in the boys Judo Championships.

Hemamalee MV, Kandy and Somadevi MV, Sevanagala took the second and third places in the girls Judo Championships.
