Big money in Lanka Cement all-island softball cricket tourney

The biggest purse in the history of Sri Lanka softball cricket of Rs. 250,000 will be on offer at the All-Island two innings league tournament which will be held from the first week of October with over 100 teams expected to participate.

This was revealed at a press conference held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports auditorium at Bauddhaloka Mawatha on Thursday with the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando. The tournament will be sponsored by "Lanka Cement Limited", and conducted by the Sri Lanka Softball Cricket Federation (SLSCF).

Over one hundred teams from 17 districts have registered for participation in the tournament. They are - Colombo North and South, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Kalutara, Matale, Ratnapura, Kandy, Matara, Gampaha along with two teams from the district of Mannar.

According tothe rules, the length of the wicket will be reduced from the conventional 22 yards to 21 yards while the tournament will be conducted in the customary points system. Also this year, all players will have to wear white and cricket shoes and socks.

The winners of the tournament will carry a cool prize of Rs. 100,000 while runners-up will receive Rs. 50,000. The two losing semi-finalists also receive Rs. 25,000 each. In addition, there will be individual prizes for the Best Batsman, Bowler and Fielder of the tournament.

There will be no tournament fees charged for the participants, but, it will be only opened for the members of the SLSCF. Those non-members who aspire to participate in this tournament will have to send in their application for affiliation on or before 30th September to Annesley Mendis, Hon.
