Fish scales for better use by Chanuka Mannapperuma The Industrial Development Board (IDB) has developed a new technology to clean, dye and scent fish scales and manufacture fish meals from fish waste. According to environmentalists, pollution caused by fish waste is a major problem encountered by those living within the environs of fisheries harbours in Sri Lanka. Around three tons of fish is estimated to be wasted everyday. According to the IDB, this new technology will be useful in creating a healthy, clean environment and improving the economic well-being of those living close to these fisheries harbours. The IDB has launched a programme to transfer this new technology through selected entrepreneurs to fisheries harbours in Kirinda, Galle, Trincomalee, Beruwala, Negombo, Hambantota, Tangalle, Kalpitiya, Batticaloa and Devinuwara. The IDB is also planning to set up three fish meal manufacturing units in proximity to fisheries harbours at Batticaloa, Beruwala and Kalpitiya. The Board hopes to generate 50 employment opportunities by developing these projects. Meanwhile, a prominent handicraft professional, Ramani Arsakularatne has promoted self-employment opportunities among several women entrepreneurs in the fisheries industry, who have been trained under her in making handicrafts. They can earn foreign currency as well. An exhibition of handicrafts made out of fish scales and fins organised by Arsakularatne will be held on October 19 at the Hotel Galadari. |
