Yala Village Hotel : in harmony with nature by BEVERLEY JANSZ Sri Lanka is said to be one of the finest photographic locations in the world. Yala is fast gaining recognition for its density of leopards while Minneriya-Kaudulla is said to contain some of the largest herds of elephants in the world.
The latest addition to Sri Lanka's hotel industry is the Yala Village Hotel, a nature's paradise in close proximity to the Yala Sanctuary. It commenced operations last month. It is a fully BOI approved venture. Built into the existing scrub forest, the hotel blends and compliments the surrounding fauna and flora. Built at the border of Palatupana-Kirinda beach, in a most scenic location and overlooking the famous Light House at Yala, the 40 well appointed deluxe AC rooms surround the premises that stretch from the beach to the lagoon. The single, twin and quad chalets with verandah, are equipped with all modern facilities including air conditioning, satellite TV with in-house movies, mini-bar stocked, telephone and IDD facilities, hot/cold water, hair dryer and electric kettle with Coffee/Tea free of charge. 'The three types of chalets allows us to cater to the individual family and groups' says General Manager, Yala Village Hotel, Marlon Mendis, a versatile and experienced hotelier. He said that the hotel offers special rates for members of wild life clubs/associations. A sprawling swimming pool with a fine dining room on one end and a 3 storeyed lounge, that overlooks the coast and surrounding jungle from horizon's end, is most sought after by the safari and nature-seeking tourists, both foreign and Sri Lankan. General Manager, Marlon Mendis, known for his hospitality, with over 25 years experience in the hotel trade, both here and overseas, provides flexibility in services offered, with special emphasis being made for the Sri Lankan clientele. Executive Chef, Vijitha Gunawardena is ready to cater to the most demanding culinary cuisine seeker. The Yala Village Hotel offers jungle trekking, bird watching, beach hiking on incredible sand dunes on one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful and unspoilt beaches. The latest addition to the hotel will be a extra-luxury suite, to be opened soon. 'We believe that to 'see nature' you've got to 'live nature', be a part of it. That is how and why we came about this village, the way it is, said Julian A. Davis, Managing Director of the hotel. 'We had carefully studied the resident animal 'behaviour' their 'pathways' etc. and built the hotel around them so that still, today the animals wander around, undisturbed. General Manager, Marlon Mendis who began his hotel career as a receptionist / supervisor in 1980 paid a tribute to his board of directors for giving him an opportunity to join hands in the opening of the Yala Village Hotel and be a part of a 'nature's paradise.' The Yala Village Hotel is owned and managed by Yala Village Hotel (Pvt.) Ltd. Kirinda, Tissamaharama. Its directors are M. Abeypala Perera (Chairman) and Julian A. Davis (Managing Director). ############## Palm Beach Hotel : in the blue waters of Mt. Lavinia Refurbishing done at the Palm Beach Hotel, Mt. Lavinia has up-graded this 'nearest to the city resort' to a star class hotel offering all modern facilities. The 45-room deluxe luxury hotel at de Saram Road, began operations recently after the refurbishment. All rooms have been tastefully re-designed with beautiful interior decor.
