Japan trains blue collar workers The programme to train blue collar workers in the private sector under a technology transfer programme with Japan, which commenced in 1994, has been extremely successful. This programme was initiated by Nihal Abeysekera during his Chairmanship of Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI). Abeysekera, an industrialist and Board member of several companies, saw the need to train blue collar workers. Seeing Japan as the most suitable country, Abeysekera, through his business contacts together with the Co-operative Society of Kanagawa Ken Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion, launched the programme in co-ordination with the Ministry of Enterprise Development. The programme is confined to CNCI member companies. Annually around 10-12 workers are sent for training for a one-year programme at no cost to them. On their return, they have helped their companies with the knowledge and experience gained during their training period to increase productivity. This is seen on the factory floor, where fellow workers have built up their morale by showing a greater interest and enthusiasm in their work. Representatives from the Japanese firms had visited the companies who had sent workers for training and were satisfied with the reports received. Abeysekera, Patron of CNCI is at present the President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka. |
