Sri Lanka produces "stunning results" at CIMA exam by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka won six out of 19 world prizes at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) annual examination held in May this year, it was revealed at the recent CIMA Convocation held in Colombo. Deputy President CIMA, Prof G. Roland Kaye called this "stunning results", where Sri Lanka took 30 per cent of the world prizes. Prof Kaye said four local students won six world prizes for the highest marks at the examination. M. Yogarajah won three prizes for Best Performance in Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Economics for Business and Business Law; W.P. Ramani and W.A.U. Wijesingha won a prize each for Best Performance in Management Accounting Fundamentals and Best Performance in Financial Accounting International Standard respectively while D.A.P. Cooray won a prize for Business Mathematics, obtaining 99 marks out of a possible 100. Prof Kaye said the local students' achievements are a credit to the country and their families. He said around 3500 Lankan accountants are employed across the globe, from Australia to Canada. He also described Sri Lanka as an important source of expertise in management accounting. Each year, over 2000 new students take up CIMA studies. CIMA President, Pravir Samarasinghe said there had been a tremendous improvement in the recent past, both in the infrastructure of colleges and the methodology in delivery of lectures. "This is a great credit to the colleges, to the lecture panels and to the profession. I hope their efforts will be recognised when visitors from CIMA, UK arrive here in the near future to asses for themselves the standard maintained by our colleges," he said. |
