Standard Chartered Bank sponsors Heartbeat

Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) is sponsoring 'Heartbeat 150', a mission started last year.

A 11-member team of doctors from Guys Hospital, UK, led by Dr Conal Austin, flew down to Colombo and was here till October 1. The mission was to perform heart operations on about 70 local children, who would have died without access to this level of care.

Most operations were carried out at the National Hospital and were coordinated through Dr Hector Weerasinghe. The mission also visited Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital and received assistance from Asha Central Hospital.

Christopher Keljik, Group Executive Director MESA (Middle East, Europe and South Africa) was in colombo from September 25 to 26 to observe at first hand the 'Heartbeat 150' mission.

Keljik's visit coincides with the bank's global Community Week. In Sri Lanka, it is supporting nine projects during the week, within the categories of youth, health, education, environment and trust/care. The projects include the 'Seeing is believing' international project, where SCB is committed to restoring eyesight to 28,000 people and 'Living with HIV', its award-winning programme to help educate staff and the public on facts surrounding HIV.

Supported directly by the SCB Board of Directors, the 'Heartbeat 150' effort (named such because the bank is celebrating 150 years this year), fits closely with the bank's belief in providing real and measurable benefits to the communities in which it operates. The project was entirely sponsored through funds raised by the bank's 1,100 staff in London. A similar mission from the Guy's Hospital, also sponsored by Standard Chartered, will leave for Kenya later this year.

Vishnu Mohan, new CEO for SCB in Sri Lanka said the bank's commitment to the island is also reflected in its community development involvement. Mohan stressed that as CEO, he is dedicated to ensuring the bank's growing involvement in the community and investing to ensure that the bank becomes the number one international bank in the country.
