Nikado, the safe drinking water by Pelham Juriansz Nikado from Nikado Mineral Water (Pvt) Ltd has been declared as a safe drinking water by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). "There are about 60 brands of mineral water in the local market, but most of them are not suitable for consumption. In a climate like ours, we need to consume about two litres of water per day," Dr Srilal de Silva, Deputy Director General SLSI told a news conference at the Nikado City Office in Kadawata. Nikado mineral water and seven other brands from local companies have received the 'green light' to sell water with the SLS 894 certification. "This water is free from harmful chemical and pathogenic agents. Some of the mineral water that we consume today can give us illnesses like hepatitis A, typhoid, para-typhoid, bacillary dysentery and cholera. There is Arsenic in the water and some water have led to people developing stomach problems in areas like Anuradhapura, Matara and Polonnaruwa," Dr de Silva said. Nikado, which has been previously noted for its papadam, has now gained a name in the mineral water market. The water originates from a protected well as opposed to an open or unprotected well as is the case with many bottled water brands. Other mineral water companies with the SLS 894 certification are Dingle Spring (bottled by LSB Mineral Water Company (Pvt) Ltd), Fern (Dual Link International Pvt Ltd), Mayfield (Mayfield Mineral Springs Pvt Ltd), Quencher (Quencher Enterprises), Orzone (Watercor Mineral Water Company Pvt Ltd), Sogo (Uni Lanka Marketing Services Pvt Ltd), Inarie (Nimal Traders) and Scan (Scan Products Pvt Ltd). |
