Noise guard to control sound pollution The Instrumentation Group of the Metrology and Instrumentation Division of the Industrial Technology Institute has designed and developed a noise guard to control excessive noise generated at public places and at places of entertainment. The noise guard has provision to control excessive noise at any pre-settable level depending on the requirement. In addition the equipment also has the facility to warn the user when the noise exceeds the pre-determined level. The product is now successfully used at a hotel in Mount Lavinia. Excessive noise has long been recognised as an environmental and health hazard, a public nuisance interfering with the day-to-day lives of people by disturbing communication, work, rest and sleep. The permissible noise levels as recommended by the Central Environmental Authority depends on several factors with permissible levels being higher for industrial areas in comparison to residential and commercial areas and levels recommended for the day being higher than those recommended for the night. With the noise guard, the permissible levels could be conveniently maintained at the boundary of the noise-causing establishment so that the noise that is caused will in no way be a problem to those living and working around these establishments. |
