September's stormed out....... Helloween's next

The weather was ok, but the Pro Cart Centre witnessed so much thunder and high voltage that it could barely keep its roof in place. September 20 was Rock Saturday. The venue was perfect, a slight gloom embracing the wide area, built as if to withstand the heavy decibel output lashed out by some of the bands.

The show opened with the likes of Taunt; freshers who bear a strong nu metallic 'hard rock' resemblance to God Smack and Fuel. As the first opening act this band proved they have the brawn to muscle it up to rise in the years to come. The next band was a very impressive punk three piece called The Picasso Recess. The level of originality and tightness which the band displayed was fantastic, considering they've been in existence for just three weeks! The response both these bands received from the audience was most encouraging.

The diversity of rock music in this modern age was displayed in the Hard Rock/Fusion talents of Whirlwind. The young band who were worthy finalists at this year's TNL On Stage, showed that the age of playing cover versions has lost its appeal. Their own compositions kept crowds satisfied till the next band took to the stage. Enter The Fallen; a tight Nu Metal outfit that also proved their mettle and 'metal' at On Stage this year. The Fallen's originality and style new to the local music industry were further established.

Stigmata came on next and unleashed all hell and fury to eager crowds, with their choice of complex driven Power Metal. They displayed tightness and gave a crushing performance, with their originals. The Alternative legacy Independent Square performed to a pumped up crowd with a perfectly groomed set of songs which included a popular cover or two, defining their territory. Gospel Rockers Ezra closed the event with their sedated yet energized take on rock songs, especially their originals.

September 20 gave a hint of what we could expect in the days and weeks to come. The change of venue was indeed a good move, the sounds, lights and atmosphere were far superior to some of the earlier Rock Saturday venues. It is spacious, and it was heartening to note that the venue provides perfect shelter from even a thunder storm. Rock fans can count the days till the next Rock Saturday in October which is rumoured to be a 'Helloween' night... when they can expect more dynamite from some of the heaviest bands to have hit them between the eyes.
