J'pura University re-opens tomorrow by ANJANA GAMAGE The Management Faculty of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University will re-open tomorrow, amid renewed protests by the undergraduates for the removal of the Vice Chancellor. The University was closed on September 24 following clashes between two student factions. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has, on the directive of the Minister of Tertiary Education Kabir Hashim, appointed a committee to investigate the violent clashes that left several students injured and caused costly damage to university property. Vice Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University Dr. D.S. Epitawatte said that all necessary arrangements have been made to re-open the Management Faculty, but claimed that the re-opening of the Arts Faculty was yet undecided. Meanwhile the members of the Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF) and other students launched a Sathyagraha Campaign opposite the UGC on Thursday demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor and calling for an impartial investigation into the clashes. "Send home the VC who created violence" was one of the placards carried by the undergraduates at the protest march. The IUSF which held discussions with UGC Chairman Prof. B. R. R. N. Mendis, demanded the temporary removal of the VC from the University and called for investigations under a competent authority. Meanwhile the executive officers and the academic staff of the university appealed to the President, Prime Minister, Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs and Minister of Tertiary Education and Training to retain the services of Dr. Epitawatte and handed over a memorandum to this effect to the UGC Chairman on Friday. |
