Ruhuna University Silver Jubilee

by Anjana Gamage

The Silver Jubilee celebrations of the University of Ruhuna, will commence tomorrow at the university premises at 10.00am with a variety of fascinating programmes on promoting educational and communal harmony in the country, Dr. Ruchira Cumaranatunga, Chairman of the Exhibition Committee, said.

"A new era of expanding intellectual horizons from Ruhuna" is the theme of the celebrations and Matara District Parliamentarian Ronnie de Mel, who initiated the beginning of the Ruhunu University in 1978 will be the chief guest.

The six-day exhibition will provide an opportunity for the general public to view the state-of-the-art technological achievements of the Ruhunu university students as well as the students of other universities in the country along with the government and private sector companies.

The establishment of a business incubator providing analytical and testing services for the public and private sector institutions will be an added feature of this year's Jubilee exhibition which continues till the 12th of this month.

At present, Ruhunu University has a student strength of 5000 with seven faculties including the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences - the first of its kind in the country.
