The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Friday on the Kandy road, opposite the Holy Family Convent, Jaffna.

According to reports the two motorcycle riders were killed on the spot following the head on collision. The civilians of the area had surrounded the Army vehicle and pelted it with stones and bottles injuring two policemen and four civilians. Reinforcements of Army and Police rushed to the scene had fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. Informed sources said that the civilians had put up road blocks on the Palaly road, preventing Army vehicles from travelling between the Palaly base and Jaffna town.

Sources said the situation had been brought under control, after officials of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and the LTTE leaders met the civilians agitating over the incident and the Army officials in Jaffna.
