Vandalism during Railway strike

The Joint Alliance of Railway Trade Union yesterday accused the members of another union of orchestrating the mob violence at the Fort Railway Station on Friday.

The Chairman of the Alliance said the commuters were not involved in the attack and added that the railway workers who were on strike had summoned the police, as they were not involved in the sabotage. Meanwhile, widespreade damage to railway properties, locomotive engines and various other machineries were reported from Colombo Fort and Maradana railway stations and other stations in the northern and coastal lines on Friday.

The estimate cost of the damage is over Rs. 100. million. Managing Director of the Railway Authority N.F.U.K. Fernando accused the railway employees on strike as being responsible for the attacks.

Fernando further said that the investigations were on into the derailment near the Slave Island station on October 1, and warned that legal action will be taken against all those involved in destroying or damaging railways properties.

The 48 hour token strike launched by Railway Trade Union Joint Federation and Railway Services Trade Union Joint Front was called off on Friday morning, but was reimposed in the evening, much to the inconvenience of the train communters, many of who were left stranded late in the evening.

The Railways Authority stated that actions will be taken to prevent another incident of this nature. Fernando said that the Chairman and the Board of the Railways Authority would look into the prospects to discuss employees' demands with the Treasury. -DPL
