Danger of SLEAS being crippled by incompetent officials - Minister by Anjana Gamage Minister of Education Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku has warned of the danger of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service SLEAS being crippled by incompetent and unqualified officials. According to ministry sources, there are only 2400 posts in the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS), but at present the figure has exceeded more than double with 9000 SLEAS officials serving in the ministry, 6000 of whom have entered SLEAS during the PA regime and another 3000 through the provincial councils. There are two exams (open and limited) conducted for SLEAS entry and for future prospects in the service, but it has been revealed that certain SLEAS officials do not have even their O/L qualification, and are found to be holding higher positions. "Recently an Assistant Director who visited a rural school was found to be qualified only in the GCE O/L while the principal of the school was a MA degree holder, a Ministry spokesman said. Meanwhile, according to a survey carried out throughout the country by the All Ceylon Principals Union recently revealed that about 3000 school principals who serve in the provincial council schools and 27 national schools are not fit to be in the positions they hold. |
