Minister Amaratunga's Silver Jubilee Christian Affairs and Interior Minister John Antony Emmanuel Amaratunga will celebrate 25 years in politics on the 19th of this month. Minister Amaratunga, Attorney-at-Law, made history by entering Parliament as the first appointed Member for Wattala Electorate under the 1978 Democratic Socialist Republican Constitution which also introduced the Executive Presidential System of Government. He was nominated by the UNP hierarchy to replace Mr. D. Shelton Jayasinghe, the then Post and Telecommunication Minister and the first MP for the Wattala Electorate whose sudden death made Wattala seat vacant. A series of social and religious ceremonies have been organised to mark the Silver Jubilee and felicitate Minister Amaratunga beginning with a Holy Mass at St. Sebastian's Church, Kandana at 7.00 am. on Thursday the 9. A special Buddhist religious ceremony will be held at the Purana Viharaya, Hendala at 6.30 pm.on the same day. The celebration will end with a massive rally at the Navaloka Grounds, Welisara on the 19. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers and Members of Parliament representing Gampaha district will attend the main religious ceremony at St.Anne's Church, Wattala on the 18. Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim religious services within the Wattala electorate will also take place to invoke blessings on the Minister. (WIRUMA) |
