Kandy Wace Park Hill climb Oct 12

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

The annual Kandy Wace Park Speed Hill Clubm organised by the Kandy Motor Sports Club in association with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) has been revived after a lapse of two years and will be conducted along Ehalepola Kumarihamy Mawatha and Rajapihilla Mawatha in the City of Kandy on Sunday October 12th commencing at 9 a.m. There will be no official practices.

At a press briefing held in Kandy, presided by the President of the Club Maurice Perera, it was disclosed that the entries which are being received now will close on Monday October 6th at 5 p.m. No late entries will be accepted. Entry forms could be had from the under mentioned places and the perfected entry forms with the payment could be handed over to the same places:

1. Maurice Perera - President, Kandy Motor Sports Club, C/o Maurice Travels, 143/1/1 D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Kandy. (Tel. 074-476413, 470317, 472721, Fax 074-472589)

2. Krishnaratne & Sons, 36 Torrington Road, Kandy Tel 08-223735, 074-473161.

3. Premadasa Group of Companies, 179 Jayantha Weerasekera Mawatha, Colombo 10, (Telephone 01-2325903).

The track at Wace Park is one of the most challenging in the island with a distance of nearly 900 metres and a few years back the original track was shifted from the lake side end of Rajaphilla Mawatha to the newly constructed Ehalepola Kumarihamy Mawatha close to the Bogambara Stadium which will start and the paddock area will be located there. This adjustment has made the track longer and also added a hair pin bend to the already challenging track with many right handed and left handed corners with the finish near the Arthur's Seat overlooking the Kandy Lake.

The last time this hill climb was held was in the year 2000. This is the only hill climb in the island which is in the heart of the city and the residents and the commercial establishments located here have extended their fullest co-operation in the past.

The course record is held by Nishan Weerasooriya who timed 48.93 second in his Mitsubishi Evolution a few years back. The class record for formula cars is being held by maestro Rohan de Silva and the record for motor cycles held by Shanaka Ambrose who is now domiciled in Canada.

The Organisers have agreed in conducting the following events:
