Royal and Thomian crews hard at practice for regatta on Oct. 25

by LESLIE FERNANDO

The 31st Royal-Thomian Regatta for T. N. Fernando Trophy will be on Saturday, October 25 at the CRC, Beira Lake commencing from 2.30 p.m. The regatta is hosted by the Thomians.

For Royal and Thomian crews it will be a good test to prove their skills to the selectors of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka who will be watching both schools' rowers, performances before picking some of the best for the proposed Asian Junior Rowing Championships to be held in Hong Kong next month.

The Royal and Thomian oarsmen have begun hard training, six days a week until October 23 on the Beira Lake mornings and the evenings. There is 20 days left for this prestigious event. Both coaches Hiran Dorenegama (Royal) and Ajith Goonewardena (S. Thomas') are busy putting their crews in good shape for the big event. There are few newcomers in both sides but lot will depend from the experienced rovers from either side. Last year it was S. Thomas' all the way. They won the overall title and the prestigious 'Boat Race.'

The Thomians won the overall title for 16th time and took the T. N. Fernando Trophy, by a big margin of 34 points to 6. They won 4 trophies out of 6, showing superior skills and outrowed arch rivals Royal.

In the series, Royal have won the 'plum' 13 times and one ended in a tie. Thomian oarsmen won the Senior Sculls (Senior Sculls Trophy), Senior Pairs (Freddie Raux Trophy), Junior Fours (Eraj Wijesinghe Trophy) and Senior Fours (Boat Race Trophy).

The fifth win for the Thomians was in the Junior 'B' Fours-no points awarded for this event. Meanwhile, Royal won the Junior Sculls (Ajith Goonewardena Trophy) and the Junior Pairs (Chulla Samarasinghe Trophy).

The Boat Race tally stands equal with 17 wins each. Royalists won the Boat Race in 2000 and 2001 but the Thomians won in 2002. This is the main event of the regatta.
