Achieving double-digit growth, focus of CCC Convention

Strategies to achieve double-digit economic growth for business organisations will be the focus at the Business Convention 2003 on the theme 'Regaining Sri Lanka and Beyond'. It is being organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and is scheduled from October 16-18 at the Colombo Plaza.

The CCC initiates action to identify and address future trends and key issues to assist businesses in developing strategic business plans to meet new challenges and opportunities. The annual convention, being held for the fourth successful year, is part of the Chamber's efforts in this context.

'Regaining Sri Lanka' presents the Government's strategy to meet economic challenges facing the country and to achieve 10 per cent economic growth on a sustainable basis and create 2.6 million jobs.

"We selected a theme which is a priority of the Government, international aid agencies and the business sector and to provide a forum for the participation and discussion of representatives from all these sectors. There is a major role for the private sector in the 'Regaining Sri Lanka' programme and it is a challenge for business organisations to take optimum advantage from this programme," said Prof Lakshman Watawala, Chairman of the Convention Sub Committee.

He explained that the convention will feature presentations on key strategic initiatives and group discussions on the modalities of achieving these goals. In addition, priority action plans will be identified to set the pace for Sri Lanka to emerge as a centre for growth in the region. The technical sessions of the convention will fall into five broad areas - Strategies for achieving double-digit economic growth, Role of the private sector in infrastructure development, Finance and financial services, Competitiveness and value addition, and Employment and labour.

"In addition to key business leaders and experts from Sri Lanka who will make presentations, the convention has attracted four top personalities in the business arena in Asia," Prof Watawala said.

They are Krishan Kumar Modi, President of the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Indian National Committee of International Chamber of Commerce and ex-Chairman of the Federation of Commerce and Industry, Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman of the Banyan Tree Group, Singapore, which owns listed and private companies involved in developing and operating hotels, resorts, spas, residential properties, retail galleries and other life-style related activities, Dato Jegathesan, Chief Executive Officer JJ International Consultants and former Deputy Director General, Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Senior Investment Adviser UNCTAD and Senior Investment Technology Adviser UNIDO, Asia Africa Investment Technology Promotion Centre and R. Seshayee, Managing Director of Ashok Leyland Ltd, India which has operations in Sri Lanka.

Delegations from Singapore and Malaysia will participate at the convention. The foreign business representatives are scheduled to meet their local counterparts to identify investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.
