La Cicadas back in today's scene

Seated (L-R) Vijaya Weerasekera and Maurice Evarts. Standing (L-R) Nihal Perera, Nimal Fonseka and Bobby Hatthalla.

In the sixties the Sinhala music scene saw the formation of a talented five piece band led by Nihal Fonseka a versatile singer from Kelaniya. Calling themselves 'La Cicadas' the band was a popular choice for many of the then leading artistes when they performed weekly at the Kandy Lake Club - a hub of musical activity in the hills.

The other members of the group were lead guitarist Vijaya Weerasekera. On rhythm guitar Nihal Perera and Bobby Hatthalla bass. Wilson Gunarathne the producer of Charitha Hathak played drums for a short period for the group before Maurice Evarts took over.

The band besides backing singers at the regular shows held at the Kandy Lake Club also performed at variety shows, weddings and private parties. Music is very much in their soul and La Circadas have by popular demand re-grouped to bring musical happiness to their fans who enjoyed their many songs from the 50's and the '60s.
