Getting the right balance
and blend

by Farah Macan Markar

Mobile DJ, Director/Administration Manager of "Style Beat" Entertainment, which handles productions and promotions, with 15 years experience in his cap, Kanchana C. Mudalpath, having DJed in night clubs around Colombo and Kandy, is now rocking it out in the re-launched night club "Blitz".

A lover of R n B, hiphop, house and trance, K believes in professional DJism, and wants to take DJing in the country to a new dimension, through introducing vinyl records. "At the moment DJ's in our country, use mostly CDs, as vinyls are expensive and require knowledge in handling. I want to bring more vinyls to the country at an affordable price and take DJing in Sri Lanka to a professional level" says K.

Having had a craze for music from his itsy witsy days, K launched his unofficial career in DJing at the age of 12, playing around with cassettes (there were no CDs at the time) at a friend's party. "I just loved and still love anything to do with music" says K remembering the number of times his walkman would get confiscated, when he'd try sneak and listen to it at school (Trinity College Kandy).

Watching music and DJ exhibition videos, K spent his pre-teen years hunting whatever knowledge he could about sound, mixing music, playing for the crowd, getting the right balance and blend. He also learnt the key board. "I always wanted to be a professional, and believed in giving my best to what I did" says K. Not to be kept from where it was all happening, K began clubbing at the age of 14, whenever he came to Colombo for the holidays.

Emigrating to the Big Apple of Sri Lanka, after his O's, K did his London A's at Gateway, and began DJing for all international and local schools parties.

Thus Kanchana DJed his way into society, making a name for himself on the way. In 1996 he joined Asian Broadcasting Corporations, had to go on air as KJ and handled its productions and promotions.

After leaving ABC, K had a full go in mobile DJing, for night clubs, companies, Rotary, Leo, and 31st Night functions.

Of the big turn of the year, Night, Kanchana says it's the most happening event in any DJ's life. "I've been doing the big Three One of December since 1998 going generally from one place to another as guest DJ. 31st Night is really great. I spend the night with my friends at a hotel, go home the next day morning, which drives my parents really crazy, and sleep the 1st Jan out". This December Three One, he will be getting the grooves going at the JAIC Hilton.

26 going on 27, born on 27th March 1977, K has played rugby for Trinity and cricket for Gateway. Nicknamed Kanchi and Jumbo, he loves watching movies and eating his Ma's food. A Scooby Doo and Woody Wood Pecker fan, Jumbo's favourite movie is "The Fast and the Furious 2".

A family into marketing, Kanchi's biggest influence in life has been his Pater. "Pater helped me a lot in DJing, getting me DJ equipment and transferring it around. He also advised me in the importance of having a job to support my hobby, and has been there for me in every way" says K. Perhaps it is his father's influence, for there are three important aspects K wants in his life, in the end.

1. A Profession - (He is into marketing)
2. A Qualification - (Is studying a marketing degree)
3. A hobby - (DJing which has always been on)
