Funky fingertips

by Neomi Kodikara

No longer is it painting nails with just a plain colour; the latest craze, to hit the fashion world is dazzling long nails, preferably decorated with some nail art with a touch of daring and jewels.

Nail art varies from a simple blend of two tones to patterns and then on to accessories such as stripping tape, gems, jewels etc.

Nail art does not have to mean two-inch long nails, multicolour and encrusted with every accessary imaginable. "It can just be a simple two-colour design or mix, a strategically placed jewel on one nail. All that you need is the creative knack, to create stunning results," says Gwendoline Kuhatheva, Director of Technique International Salon, who talked to the Sunday Observer on some of the latest trends in nail decoration.

Anyone with a little bit of creativity could produce unique and breath-taking looks, she says.

Patterns can be designed to appeal both to the young as well as to the old. Suitability and wearability depend on the range of nail polishes as well as the patterns.

A teenager may go for a radical, unusual, funky nail design while a mature woman may try out the classic white nail polish tops with black, delicate design or black tops with gold or silver trim to give a bolder, more sophisticated look.

The colours of nail varnish are becoming bolder and more varied. They are no longer restricted to shades of red and pink, almost every colour you fancy is available, and with a selective eye one may adapt them to suit oneself. They could be either glittering in effect or matt finish.

A range of delicately coloured polishes gives a softer, luminous look to nails with simplicity. Outrageous girls will love tantalising colours like blue, orange, pink, purple, purple green, orange etc. and glittering varnish that glow in daylight as well as in the dark.

The most important factor is that the nail varnish should be of good quality, quick to apply, fast drying and long lasting.

Artificial nail extensions or stick-on nails for temporary application of nail tips are trendy as well as easy. Colourful, pleasant, safe and funny peel off nails will keep teens away from worries to clean the nail varnish with harsh cleansers before going to school. These reusable tips are available in bright and sophisticated colour options in fun-sized, funky packages.

Then fun stickers can be rubbed onto painted or just plain nails.

Plastic gold and silver tips can be stuck on nails for solid metallic look.

A cluster of charismatic jewellery, from diamonds, charms and rings to chains and dangles all of which can be attached to either natural nails or nail extensions are also available. Asian influence has been the inspiration behind the nail jewellery trend that is all the rage, but it has greater appeal than just the ethnic.

For a teenager, stick on nails are the ideal choice for temporary piercing which is quick and easy.

They are available in a range of designs, from delicate, subtle pieces to big, bold statements.
