Rosmead Place explosion : Suicide or accident ? by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE Police investigating the grenade explosion in the home of a gem merchant at Rosmead Place on Friday have arrested the driver who they suspect was responsible for smuggling in the grenade. The suspect will be produced before court, OIC Cinnamon Gardens Police, Chief Inspector Tissa Illeperuma said. Meanwhile, the victim has been identified as Wasantha Kumar from Nivithigala, who was employed by the businessman for nearly three years. The victim who shared a room with the businessman's driver had apparently removed the grenade from a bag which belonged to the driver, who was an ex-serviceman. The grenade had exploded when he had tried to dismantle it. Police are now checking whether the driver employed by the businessman was a deserter who smuggled a grenade into the house. He had not surrendered his service identity card to the authorities when he left the service, police said. "It still not clear whether the employee committed suicide or an accident. We are investigating the matter," police said. However, at the time of the explosion the driver had been away with the businessman. The house is located about 100 meters from the residence of the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, police said. Officers from Government Analyst's Department visited the scene. |
