Trains strike hard on exchequer by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The five-day railway strike has cost the Authority more than Rs. 20 million in lost revenue, from ticket sales, the Slave Island derailment and damages to 10 locomotives. Sri Lanka Railways Authority Additional General Manager (Operations) K.A. Premasiri said the derailment near the Slave Island that damaged four compartments had cost the Authority Rs.three million. He also said that being unable to issue tickets and being forced to extend the validity of September season tickets till October 10, had cost another Rs. six million. The strikers had also damaged 10 locomotive engines and one power set at the Maradana yard. Several engines stationed in Galle, Chilaw, Rambukkana, Aluthgama, Avissawella and Polgahawela stations had also been deactivated to prevent those from being operated by pensioners or new drivers during the strike period. Meanwhile, SLRA Chairman P.H. Manatunga said that Transport Minister Tilak Marapana who met trade union representatives and the Railways officials on Friday had decided to provide leaflets to all employees explaining the benefits they are entitled to. |
