Teachers to stage 'sick leave protest' on Oct. 21

BY ANJANA GAMAGE

More than 65,000 teachers have decided to stage a 'sick leave' protest on October 21 against the government for not addressing their grievances.

"We discussed these problems with the Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku when he met all the trade unions this year. He instructed officials to attend to our problems at this discussion. But nothing has happened so far. The Education Ministry is inefficient and nothing can be done on time. The officials are not bothered about the problems they have to address and have a lethargic attitude towards teachers", he said.

The removal of Salary Anomalies of the B.C. Perera Salary Commission, a salary increment of Rs. 5,000 for all government servants including teachers, payment of salary arrears along with the promotions, rectification of teacher transfer procedures, recommendations, cancellation of all political promotions, prompt action to effect delayed teachers' and principals' service promotions, attention to voluntary teachers' issue and an open policy providing equal opportunities for all teachers to serve in national and popular schools, are the main issues which were brought to the attention of the government.
